SUMMARY:LGBTQI Women's PRIDE Dance
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, June 21st  Twin Cities Women’s Dances will have our LGBTQ Women’s PRIDE Dance. The Twin Cities legendary all women’s band\, the Roxxy Hall Band\, will play from 7-10\, with an optional dinner/social hour starting at 6. Cost is $10 cash at the door. No pre-sale tickets. \n “Rainbows will take over the largest ballroom at the Minneapolis Eagles Club #34\, (2507 E. 25th Street) as women gather to celebrate the essence of what LGBTQ Pride means to us: women’s love for each other is worthy of respect\,” said Katie Cashel\, dance organizer. “We are thrilled that the Roxxy Hall Band will be playing for us\,” said Cashel. “Roxxy started the band in 1992 when it wasn’t easy to be “out” and when women had even fewer opportunities to do more than sing with an all male band\,” noted Cashel. “Roxxy has done so much to give women musicians an opportunity to get stage experience by playing with the band. It’s an honor to have her band play—and a whole lot of fun!” \n “I love dancing\,” said Cashel\, but not everyone does so there are lots of “extras” at the dance to help women connect and have fun. Dance Ambassadors are friendly volunteers that greet women\, are willing to talk and dance with newcomers\, introduce women to each other and help women connect to other women’s social groups and community resources.” There is a community resources table at every dance for self employed women to bring their business cards. Volunteers with an LGBTQ non-profit can also bring fliers to promote other LGBTQ community events.   \nTo help relax those dancing muscles\, chair massages by a licensed massage therapist\, Jody Hakala Ristow of The Way of Wellness Massage and Shiatsu\, are available for a small fee. \n“The photo booth has lots of fun props for great selfies or group shots\,” said Cashel\, “It’s good to be silly together and creative at the same time.” \n “Another way to build community is the give-and-take sharing table. Women bring clothes\, books\, plants\, jewelry\, etc. to share. What one woman no longer wants becomes a gift another woman can choose\,” said Cashel. “Items that are left over get donated.” \nCisgender and Transgender women\, female adjacent non-binary folks\,  lesbian\, bisexual\, pansexual\, butch/femme and supportive heterosexual women are welcome at this dance. \n  \nSee the Twin Cities Women’s Dances Facebook page for more information.

SUMMARY:Mae West and the Trial of Sex
DESCRIPTION:Walking Shadow Theatre Company presents\n\nMae West and the Trial of Sex\n\nby John Heimbuch\ndirected by Allison Vincent\n\nat Crane Theater\nMay 31- June 22\, 2025\nExtra! Extra! Provocative Playwright Mae West Runs Afoul of Broadway Censors\, Her Popular Play SEX Raided for Obscenity. Tammany Hall claims it was necessary to prevent West’s new homosexual drama\, THE DRAG\, from corrupting the youth of New York. The sultry starlet faces time in the slammer if she doesn’t amend her immoral ways and stop SEX at once! \nMae West and the Trial of Sex draws from court documents\, newspapers\, and West’s own plays to explore the overt sexuality and curious queerness of her rise to fame. Playwright John Heimbuch uses Mae West’s legal battle over censorship to show how queer representation became criminalized on stage and screen\, cutting LGBTQIA+ people off from their past. \nBefore she was an icon of the silver screen\, Mae West was a Broadway actress and playwright (under the name Jane Mast). In early 1927\, while performing in her long-running melodrama\, Sex\, about a Montreal sex worker\, West was developing a new play about Greenwich Village queer culture called The Drag. This play had a sympathetic view of homosexuality\, and included a large-scale drag ball onstage\, which worried the New York press and police. West became the target of a media campaign to clean up Broadway\, culminating in a police raid of Sex. The resulting obscenity trial resulted in the closing of Sex and The Drag\, ten days in jail for Mae West\, and a new censorship law that prevented queer characters from appearing in the American theatre for the next 40 years. \nTicket Prices:\nTickets are pick-your-price: $30 – $70.\nTicket sales only cover a portion of what it actually costs to present our plays.\nFor ticket sales to completely cover our production expenses\, a ticket would cost $50. \nYou choose your price! If you are able to pay the true cost of $50\, we ask you to do so. Or\, pay as little as $30\, or choose a more generous amount and help support our accessible ticket program. A limited number of $15 Economic Accessibility tickets are available starting one month before the performance date\, for anyone who needs to pay less\, no questions asked. Limit 2 per order. Student tickets are FREE. Limit 2 per order. Available starting one month before the performance date. \nAll seating is general admission\, though we’re happy to make accommodations or handle special seating requests. \nAccessibility:\nCrane Theater is wheelchair accessible. \nASL interpreted on Saturday\, June 14 at 7:30pm by Nella Titus (NIC) and Maria Dively (NIC)\nAudio Described on Sunday\, June 15 at 2:00pm by Elana Centor. \nContent Advisory:\nThis show is recommended for ages 16+ and includes adult language and dated references to homosexuality. \nHealth and Safety:\nWe do not currently require proof of Covid vaccination or masking. Covid policy is subject to change based on regional conditions and/or guidance.
