SUMMARY:Queer Book Launch: Midnight at the Cinema Palace at Magers & Quinn
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the launch of Christopher Tradowsky’s debut novel\, MIDNIGHT AT THE CINEMA PALACE. Tradowsky will be in conversation with local author Lindsay Starck. \nThis tender\, exuberant novel about a young man navigating coming of age in ’90s San Francisco is for readers of Garth Greenwell and André Aciman. \nWalter Simmering is searching for love and purpose in a city he doesn’t realize is fading away—San Francisco in 1993\, at the height of the AIDS epidemic and the dawn of the tech revolution. Out of college\, out of the closet\, and transplanted from the Midwest\, Walter is irresistibly drawn from his shell when he meets Cary Menuhin and Sasha Stravinsky\, a dynamic couple who live blithely beyond the boundaries of gender and sexuality. Witty and ultra-stylish\, Cary and Sasha seem to have stepped straight out of a sultry film noir\, captivating Walter through a shared obsession with cinema and Hollywood’s golden age. \nAs the three embark on adventures across the city\, filled with joie de vivre\, their lively friendship evolves in unexpected ways. When Walter befriends Lawrence\, a filmmaker and former child actor living with HIV\, they pursue a film project of their own\, with hilarious and tragic results. \nMidnight at the Cinema Palace is a vibrant and nostalgic exploration of young souls discovering themselves amidst the backdrop of a disappearing city. Christopher Tradowsky’s astonishing debut captures the essence of ’90s queer culture and the complex lives of friends seeking an aesthetically beautiful and fulfilling way of life. \nChristopher Tradowsky lived in San Francisco throughout the 1990s and drew inspiration from his time there for this book. He was also inspired by Virginia Woolf’s Orlando\, and says that “While Orlando has become the patron saint of gender fluidity\, Woolf demonstrated that an entire novel\, in both subject and style\, could be a love letter from start to finish.” In addition to the J. Michael Samuel Prize from the Lambda Literary Foundation\, Tradowsky was also the recipient of the BLOOM Literary Journal Prize for fiction in 2013. He earned a PhD in art history from UCLA. He teaches undergraduate art history and mentors in the creative writing MFA program at Augsburg University in Minneapolis. He lives in St. Paul with his husband. \nLindsay Starck was born in Wisconsin and raised in the Milwaukee Public Library. She is the author of the novels Noah’s Wife (2016) and Monsters We Have Made (2023)\, which has been named a finalist for the Minnesota Book Awards. Her short prose has appeared in Ploughshares\, the New England Review\, AGNI\, and the Southern Review\, among other places\, and has been awarded a Pushcart Prize. She currently writes and teaches in Minneapolis\, where she lives with her husband and her cattle dog.

SUMMARY:Harmonizing Identities: The True Story of a Transgender Nyckelharpist in 1700s Sweden
DESCRIPTION:Meet Magnus Johansson—a nyckelharpa player born in 1683 on Åland and assigned female at birth as Maria Johansdotter. In 1702\, they moved to Stockholm\, boldly defying gender norms in both dress and profession. They performed in local taverns\, playing nyckelharpa and singing. Their songs included sharp satire\, including one aimed at a powerful\, vengeful political figure with an overinflated ego and an inability to handle criticism. \nAfter receiving a male passport from a patron\, they began living openly as Magnus Johansson—working as a shoe cobbler’s apprentice\, leading a church choir\, and earning a reputation as both a musician and a lothario. \nJoin Renee Vaughan\, gender studies researcher\, nyckelharpist\, and ally\, to learn more about this Magnus-ificent musician\, and enjoy live music Magnus played\, along with other well-known tunes from the time and region before and after the presentation—featuring Renee Vaughan (nyckelharpa)\, Paul Sauey (guitar)\, Mikey Marget (cello)\, Dan Newton (accordion). SUMMARY:Mae West and the Trial of Sex
DESCRIPTION:Walking Shadow Theatre Company presents\n\nMae West and the Trial of Sex\n\nby John Heimbuch\ndirected by Allison Vincent\n\nat Crane Theater\nMay 31- June 22\, 2025\nExtra! Extra! Provocative Playwright Mae West Runs Afoul of Broadway Censors\, Her Popular Play SEX Raided for Obscenity. Tammany Hall claims it was necessary to prevent West’s new homosexual drama\, THE DRAG\, from corrupting the youth of New York. The sultry starlet faces time in the slammer if she doesn’t amend her immoral ways and stop SEX at once! \nMae West and the Trial of Sex draws from court documents\, newspapers\, and West’s own plays to explore the overt sexuality and curious queerness of her rise to fame. Playwright John Heimbuch uses Mae West’s legal battle over censorship to show how queer representation became criminalized on stage and screen\, cutting LGBTQIA+ people off from their past. \nBefore she was an icon of the silver screen\, Mae West was a Broadway actress and playwright (under the name Jane Mast). In early 1927\, while performing in her long-running melodrama\, Sex\, about a Montreal sex worker\, West was developing a new play about Greenwich Village queer culture called The Drag. This play had a sympathetic view of homosexuality\, and included a large-scale drag ball onstage\, which worried the New York press and police. West became the target of a media campaign to clean up Broadway\, culminating in a police raid of Sex. The resulting obscenity trial resulted in the closing of Sex and The Drag\, ten days in jail for Mae West\, and a new censorship law that prevented queer characters from appearing in the American theatre for the next 40 years. \nTicket Prices:\nTickets are pick-your-price: $30 – $70.\nTicket sales only cover a portion of what it actually costs to present our plays.\nFor ticket sales to completely cover our production expenses\, a ticket would cost $50. \nYou choose your price! If you are able to pay the true cost of $50\, we ask you to do so. Or\, pay as little as $30\, or choose a more generous amount and help support our accessible ticket program. A limited number of $15 Economic Accessibility tickets are available starting one month before the performance date\, for anyone who needs to pay less\, no questions asked. Limit 2 per order. Student tickets are FREE. Limit 2 per order. Available starting one month before the performance date. \nAll seating is general admission\, though we’re happy to make accommodations or handle special seating requests. \nAccessibility:\nCrane Theater is wheelchair accessible. \nASL interpreted on Saturday\, June 14 at 7:30pm by Nella Titus (NIC) and Maria Dively (NIC)\nAudio Described on Sunday\, June 15 at 2:00pm by Elana Centor. \nContent Advisory:\nThis show is recommended for ages 16+ and includes adult language and dated references to homosexuality. \nHealth and Safety:\nWe do not currently require proof of Covid vaccination or masking. Covid policy is subject to change based on regional conditions and/or guidance. SUMMARY:TC Pride Paddle ’25
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE READ ALL THE WAY TO THE END… \nThis is an all inclusive\, family friendly event geared towards all ages. Everyone is responsible for their own safety & parents are solely responsible for the safety of their children. That being said I’ve had many people join me on the water over the yrs including younger children & even adults that can’t swim\, all have successfully survived the adventure & had a blast doing it. =) No kayaking experience necessary for this lil adventure\, you just need a desire to have fun on the water. \nWe will be launching from Interstate Park & paddling to Osceola Landing. This is typically a 3 – 4 hr paddle/float. \nWe will meet at Interstate Park at 10:30 & paddles wet at 11am. Note… There is a fee if you do not have a state park permit. Motorcycles are also welcome to join\, Taylor’s Falls is a fun lil jaunt on 2 wheels. \nFor those needing to rent a kayak I highly recommend that you book in advance… \nCanoe & Kayak Rentals \nFor those bringing your own kayak please post a comment & we can coordinate transport with others who have room\, my trk is already fully loaded. I will have a vehicle at Osceola Landing to help transport people with their own boats back to Interstate Park. \nPlease bring a sandwich or snacks & plenty of water to stay hydrated. SMALL COOLERS ONLY. There are typically several awesome sand bars to stop & mingle\, this totally depends on the water level tho. I DO NOT encourage bringing alcoholic beverages on the water\, but I’m not your momma either. Please\, please be responsible with your drinking! \nInvite your friends\, family\, neighbors\, & bring your pup along if they kayak with you as well. Let’s make some awesome memories together. =) \nNOTE… I set the time as 9am – 5pm so you can plan from the time you leave the cities until you get back to the cities. We’re only on the water for about 4 hrs. 🌞

SUMMARY:LGBTQI Women's PRIDE Dance
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, June 21st  Twin Cities Women’s Dances will have our LGBTQ Women’s PRIDE Dance. The Twin Cities legendary all women’s band\, the Roxxy Hall Band\, will play from 7-10\, with an optional dinner/social hour starting at 6. Cost is $10 cash at the door. No pre-sale tickets. \n “Rainbows will take over the largest ballroom at the Minneapolis Eagles Club #34\, (2507 E. 25th Street) as women gather to celebrate the essence of what LGBTQ Pride means to us: women’s love for each other is worthy of respect\,” said Katie Cashel\, dance organizer. “We are thrilled that the Roxxy Hall Band will be playing for us\,” said Cashel. “Roxxy started the band in 1992 when it wasn’t easy to be “out” and when women had even fewer opportunities to do more than sing with an all male band\,” noted Cashel. “Roxxy has done so much to give women musicians an opportunity to get stage experience by playing with the band. It’s an honor to have her band play—and a whole lot of fun!” \n “I love dancing\,” said Cashel\, but not everyone does so there are lots of “extras” at the dance to help women connect and have fun. Dance Ambassadors are friendly volunteers that greet women\, are willing to talk and dance with newcomers\, introduce women to each other and help women connect to other women’s social groups and community resources.” There is a community resources table at every dance for self employed women to bring their business cards. Volunteers with an LGBTQ non-profit can also bring fliers to promote other LGBTQ community events.   \nTo help relax those dancing muscles\, chair massages by a licensed massage therapist\, Jody Hakala Ristow of The Way of Wellness Massage and Shiatsu\, are available for a small fee. \n“The photo booth has lots of fun props for great selfies or group shots\,” said Cashel\, “It’s good to be silly together and creative at the same time.” \n “Another way to build community is the give-and-take sharing table. Women bring clothes\, books\, plants\, jewelry\, etc. to share. What one woman no longer wants becomes a gift another woman can choose\,” said Cashel. “Items that are left over get donated.” \nCisgender and Transgender women\, female adjacent non-binary folks\,  lesbian\, bisexual\, pansexual\, butch/femme and supportive heterosexual women are welcome at this dance. \n  \nSee the Twin Cities Women’s Dances Facebook page for more information.
